How It Works
-
Recruit a Team
Teams will form at different institutions. Interested students may spread the word, recruit each other and seek an advisor. Or interested academics may advertise to students to form a team. There is no set way for teams to form and recruit.
-
Register
Teams will register using our registration form. They will need to have a team lead(s), some members, and an advisor. This lets us know that they are serious about TAH innovation.
-
Research
Teams will begin researching TAHs! We have some starting resources on our website, as well as some recorded webinars from 2023 on key topics. Students will drive their own learning about TAHs as well as prototyping, testing, validation and commercialization.
-
Attend webinars and events
We will run online events throughout the year. These may be educational webinars from topic experts, virtual tours of biomedical companies, patient speakers, showcases with team presentations, and more. We base our event topics and content on feedback from teams.
-
Design, build, test
(Iterate, fail, learn, improve)
Teams will build test rigs and simulations, build TAH prototype(s), test their devices, and repeat! We hope that studenst will get hands on, learn new things, make mistakes, and try again. We champion progress and novelty over recreating existing products, so we encourage teams think outside of the box! -
Document and record
Teams are required to document their progress as they go - Recording thoughts, ideas, designs, results etc. Teams will need to be prepared to show this in reports and presentations.
-
Submit assessments
Teams will be required to submit reports in accordance with our templates and guidelines. These will be used to assess teams work, and reward the stand-outs!
-
Feedback
Teams will receive feedback from industry sponsors and academic professionals! Our panel of assessors will review work and ideas through assessments, and our advisors will be available to teams throughout the year for consultations!
-
Improve and grow!
Year on year, teams will grow their knowledge of TAHs and continue to explore new ideas and refine their TAH designs!
In summary
Each year, Heart Hackathon teams will collate their research and findings and present them to the Heart Hackathon judging panel.
The best research and design teams will be granted the opportunity to present their work at the annual ISMCS Conference, where they will be surrounded by experts in the field, and researchers at the forefront of like-minded innovation.
Teams will be judged on their artificial heart devices and research and commercialisation plans, with prizes awarded to the winners.
